Bali forrest

Over the years, I struggled to understand what defined me in terms of my career. Despite my inclination towards journalism, I despised the mainstream media and rarely watched the news. To add to the absurdity of my career choice, I actually spent years believing that I disliked writing. Narrowly escaping a fail in year 12 English seemed to only exacerbate those moments of disillusionment as one endeavours to find the self. However, despite these obstacles, as time went on, I came to realise that I didn’t dislike writing, I disliked writing for someone else.

Finally, I broke through ‘society’s’ definition of what it is to be a journalist and found my own voice. I discovered yet another passion that was patiently waiting for me to stand up and take notice. Writing now serves as a source of great joy for me and I’m doubtful that I will ever forget that again.

The title of this blog – Discerning Kate – was chosen for a reason. Its meaning is two-fold and its first layer can be understood through looking at the meaning of Discernment as a virtue. From this perspective, I endeavour to discern the world around me with wisdom and sound judgement, offering comment and insight into areas that can be sometimes overlooked. Secondly, the title serves to reflect my inner journey and can be understood as looking within and discerning the self, Kate.

I am primarily interested in blogging about topics related to social consciousness, politics (the powers, systems and institutions that be), spirituality and issues pertaining to humanity as a whole – yet readers please be aware that there is content in my blog that reflects my truth, my opinion.

My sister and I fighting for justice :)

All content on this blog emanates from my heart while using my mind, knowledge and personal experience to shape and inform the issues I explore. It is my desire to serve humanity and my unquenchable thirst for truth that motivates me, nothing more.

pyramidsI am well travelled and spent majority of my adult life outside of Australia. Having spent much time in both Asia and South America, it was my beloved Middle East I love Israel + Palestinethat always drew me back. It is this attraction to the Middle East that resulted in my present project; the writing of my first feature film. It’s a political-drama set in the Middle East called Love Thy Neighbor. It is inspired by true events.

I also teach yoga, practice meditation and do reiki. At present my new found passion is acro yoga and dancing. I am highly spiritual and believe that the problems humanity face today are largely spiritual in nature. I follow a higher universal law and answer only to myself and God. I understand my acro yoga thailandpurpose for being here on Earth at this time is to fulfil my divine mission. I am passionate about world peace and ending poverty and each step I take on my path is geared towards achieving this end.

Please feel free to comment with any constructive criticism, suggestions, comments or anything else that comes to the heart or mind – that’s precisely what I’m doing! 🙂

Some philosophies and quotes I live by:

“Be the change you would like to see in the world” Mahatma Gandhi. – My life philosophy.

“In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable. And help to change it.” Ernst Fischer. – My aspirations for my writing.

“Just look at us. Everything is backwards. Everything is upside-down. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the major media destroy information, and religion destroys spirituality.” Michael Ellner. – My worldview.

“I love humanity, lets work this shit out together.” My attitude.
